Deloitte, one of the top four accountancy firms in the world, has released it’s 2018 Global Blockchain Survey report, revealing that blockchain technology is getting closer to it’s “breakout moment.”
The 48-page report, written by Stephen Marshall and Tyler Welmans, collates more than 1,000 blockchain educated executives responses to a number of questions around the technology and space as a whole. Deloitte’s report covered a number of areas that surround the world of blockchain technology and ultimately revealed some exciting news for the future.
Of the 1,000 blockchain educated executives who were surveyed, all of which came from a variety of industries and professions, more than 95% revealed that they or their companies were investing in blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT) for the future.
Deloitte’s survey collated information from a wide range of industry executives including those in financial services, health care, the public sector and technology, media and communications. The survey went on to disclose just how much those executives were willing to invest when it came to enterprise level blockchains.
To further support the fact that businesses were beginning to invest in the blockchain, 40% of executives globally revealed that their companies would spend over $5 million on blockchain technology within the next year. Out of all of the participants surveyed, 65% reported that their business will be investing $1 million or more in blockchain technology in the coming year. The enterprises with the largest investments will be coming from Mexico, France, and Canada.
In the United States around 26% of those companies stating they would invest anywhere between $1 million to $5 million in blockchain technology. This positive news is only echoed by the statistic that 23% of companies globally are willing to invest between $5 million and $10 million, with 16% willing to invest over $10 million. In China, 32% of companies noted that they would invest between $5 million to $10 million, and in Mexico, 21% of companies said they would invest $10 million or more.
Former TokenMarket clients Storj Labs and Rivetz were also cited as good examples of “emerging disruptors” within the blockchain space. These top blockchain companies use blockchain in very different ways and are a great example of how versatile the technology is.
The report outlines how enterprise businesses view blockchain in comparison to emerging businesses and outline how blockchain technology is beginning to make its way into traditional financial institutions and retailers. For these enterprise organisations, blockchain needs to offer a “more sensible, pragmatic business ecosystem disruption” if it is to be a success.
It appears as though most of these businesses do not want to get left behind and are willing to spend the money in order to be at the forefront of technological development. One of the key takeaways from the report is that around 74% of all respondents found that there was a “compelling business case”.
Around half of that 74% revealed that their company already had some form of blockchain system in place, with a further 41% revealing that their business was looking to deploy a blockchain system within the next year. This could highlight the fact that for many legacy businesses feel there is still not a valid use case for their operation but that they are trying to ensure their business keeps up with the times.
The report highlighted how global attitudes to blockchain technology were actually viewed too. According to the survey, the perception of blockchain’s capabilities appears to be more established outside of the United States. When participants were asked if they believed that blockchain was just “a database for money” with limited capabilities outside of finance, only 18% of US respondents agreed with that statement compared to 61% in France and the United Kingdom.
Final Thoughts
This latest report from Deloitte is a great insight into just how businesses are looking to adopt blockchain in the near future. Whilst it might not be all good news it gives deep thought into how traditional businesses view the technology, giving examples of what is needed to change in order for it to become a widely adopted tool. Ending on a high, the report stated that:
“The view further down the road is an inspiring one. We see blockchain enabling a completely new level of information exchange both within—and across—industries. As connections are made between blockchain and other emerging technologies, particularly the cloud and automation, we see the potential for blockchain to help organisations create and realise new value for businesses beyond anything we can imagine with existing technologies.”
