In my previous video, I demonstrated how to start small (young) plants in an NFT hydroponic system using capillary action through the use of a wick-able material such as cotton, acrylic, or yarn to keep the plants hydrated until their roots reach the bottom of the pipes.
Today, I’m showing you an alternative solution for larger plants with tall vegetative growth. If your plants are tall enough to reach outside the pipes, you can skip the net cups, clay pebbles, and other materials altogether and place the plants directly in the pipes! 🌱✨
Here’s why this works:
The NFT system is similar to waterfalls in nature, in that it aerates the water as it circulates, providing plants with both the water/nutrient solution and oxygen they need to grow. As the plant continues to grow they’ll even produce “air roots” that allow them to take up even more oxygen.
If you’re concerned about overwatering, you can simply use a timer to turn the pump on and off at intervals to allow the plants to dry out a bit. But this isn’t really necessary.
This method makes it easier and cheaper to grow larger plants in your NFT system without the need for extra materials. 🌞💧
