What are PFP NFTs? (Avatar projects explained for beginners)

I take a brief overview of Profile Picture NFT projects. Where they came from, why they exist and what they’re generally about.

Like comic books in the 70s to outsiders it just seems like something weird and nerdy just for kids, until 30 years later everyone is enjoying a Marvel film at the cinema. The culture and community slowly builds over time until it takes over and you turn into a grumpy old person realizing you missed a game changing movement.

PFP communities build around what people enjoy. People enjoy Memes. People enjoy status. People enjoy being part of something bigger than themselves.

The basic primary desire to mix digital with social and belong to a community.

It’s come off the back of two projects mainly that proved the case and have done well.
Crypto Punks which were free to mint 4 years ago and Bored apes that cost .08 Eth to mint a few month ago. Crypto Punks proved the technology in an art way showing how it’s possible to have generative qualities and traits with all the verifiable stuff that comes with NFTs. Bored Apes took that a step further, upped the quality of the art and random generative approach and provided a roadmap that showed you were joining a club. Every other avatar project has taken the lead from there and added their own value and approach.

It’s a way into helping build an early community, based around an art style genre you like, and betting on a team like in a way you might buy stocks in an early startup hoping they build further utility into the project

Some I have are Bored Apes, MetaHeroes, Vogu, Animeta, Evols, DotDotDot.
I obviously kick myself because I passed on Crypto Punks at a few hundred dollars, and are beyond my budget now at millions of dollars, but you never know.

Some I missed I will still try and get in on Cool Cats, Meebits,
Ones I like but probably won’t jump into World of Women, Sup ducks, Cyber Kongz. I think you can’t effectively be part of every community. You must choose. And the great part is that being an active part of the community can bring greater value to it overall. Strong community equals a strong coin or NFT project.

So if you want to join a group or movement often you can even join their Discords for free. Then if you want to take part further then jump in, but know that PFP NFT are extremely liquid especially after the first couple of weeks of launch.

You can use rarity tools to check scarcity and also what is launching soon (please know that they pay to get listed.) But I mainly just watch my Twitter feed to see what people are getting excited about and what I’m vibing with.

Drop any questions you may have in the comments and I may do a follow up Q&A or let me know which PFP you’re part of and why.
